Behind the Scenes
Meet the owner of Kitchens By Design – John Russel
January 2024
Tell us a little about yourself?
I have an eye for good design and have spent the past 30 years renovating villa’s in Devonport with my partner Richelle. We have an almost 18-year-old son, and an 8-year-old Weimaraner, called Millie.
What drove you to buy a business?
I had spent 30+ years working for large companies in the construction equipment industry specialising in equipment finance, inventory, and sales management. I felt I had the skills to run my own business and had been exploring options for some time. This design led business created the right opportunity to try something different, this time for myself.
Why did you buy Kitchens by Design?
Kitchens by Design has a 30+ year heritage of quality, craftsmanship and great design. It is a well-known Kitchen Design business, with a legacy of the award-winning designers behind it (many still working with us today). Having spent years meticulously renovating villas, complete with new kitchens, my partner and I knew the brand well. When we realised it was for sale, there was an immediate connection to it; an established brand with both equity in name and legacy in design. I felt it was the right opportunity, at the right time.
What is your view on craftsmanship and quality?
I have an eye for detail and will not compromise on quality. It is important and remains vital moving forward not deviate from the legacy that has been built over the years, our staff and design team are critical to our business, and the quality that we deliver to customers creates clients for life. My commitment to quality and service is built off the heritage of this brand and I will continue to honour this legacy working with our talented cabinetmakers, craftsman, and key suppliers.
What changes have been made in the first six months?
The only change made was the relocation of the Showroom to Newmarket, which was already underway when we contracted to buy the business. Future changes will only enhance the quality, craftsmanship, design team and delivery of beautiful Kitchens, Bathrooms, Wardrobes or Cabinetry for our customers and clients.
So six months in, have you had a break or a holiday?
Yes, the showroom closes for three - four weeks over December / January. It’s a welcome break for the Designers, and I. Time to recharge and reset for the New Year but as a new business owner you never really switch off.
What do you do to unwind over the Holidays?
We escape up North for a few weeks over the Holiday Season. I enjoy a good book, a little bit of sun and surf, but mostly just downtime taking in the sea air and sound of the rolling waves from the outdoor deck. We rent the same place every year, a simple bach as a simple escape.
What is good design to you?
Clean lines, versatile surfaces and contemporary is my ideal kitchen. I live a villa with Resene Black White walls and traditional features oozing from each and every wall. The ceilings have extensive scotia and cornice detailing and large ceiling roses, but the kitchen is as black as the ace of spades, with long minimalist contemporary lines. The juxtaposition of the two styles traditional and contemporary can work really well together, in my opinion.
