This family of three, lovingly influenced by life in Japan, constantly shares the kitchen.
Zen Design Simplicity
Both parents and their 13-year-old daughter prepare and cook together in their lovely villa home. Their brief was vague, unsure, as they had never planned a new kitchen.
They were looking for guidance and expressed a strong desire for:
- Something special and different
- A wow factor
- Practical, clean and organised
- Lots of storage and bench space
- Room for small appliances
- A second small fridge for Japanese ingredients
I decided to draw on the Japanese theme by taking in their surrounding furniture and art. The colours of the leathered Titanium Granite started my colour scheme. The mitred island ‘block’ provides the required bench space and sits in proportion to the open-plan living.
Centring the cooker within the cabinetry along the back wall balanced the fridge and bi-fold pantry/appliance garage nicely. Two additional space towers, one on each side, give ample food storage. A jet-black leathered splashback and black cooker help balance the central feature. Above, timber battens add the desired texture and give a Japanese feel.
The Tasmanian Blackwood cabinetry, crown cut and mismatched, gives a natural, organic feel. The suggestion to incorporate a fully integrated fridge was well received and essential to achieving the desired result. An under-bench fridge drawer within the island completed their requests.
